I just finished “reading” The Operators by Michael Hastings. I put “reading” in quotes because I actually listened to it on Audible. Michael Hastings is the Rolling Stone reporter who wrote the story, Runaway General, about General Stanley McChrystal. After the article was published, General Stanley McChrystal was fired.
It seems kind of crazy that McCrystal’s staff would give this kind of access to a reporter, but then again, they mostly enjoyed a favorable relationship with the media. A give and take. We’ll give you full access in return for a favorable story. At least that’s the way that Michael Hastings made it seem. He only wrote about what he saw and heard, was never told things were off the record, and General McChrystal’s team never even denied the statements. The Rockstar General was fired over it.
If you’re interested in Afghanistan affairs or military affairs, you’ll enjoy this book. Don’t think this is an Army hating book, it’s not. He actually writes favorably about the military and about General Stanley McChrystal, but he also writes openly about McChrystal’s criticism of civilian leadership of the military and President Obama and Vice President Biden, in specific.
What this book will do is give you an insider’s look at the life of a top military officer. First class lounges, European tours, private planes, and large entourages. Read it.
